ACCESS AND PARKING:  Open daily from dawn to dusk. Parking is available. A boat launch is available from the first parking lot. Information about the forest lands and camping opportunities are available at this office or visit Worthington’s website for availability and pricing details of campsites. In season, please do not enter campsites unless they are empty. Black bear is possible in this region, so please admire from a distance.

SITE DESCRIPTION:  The best way to explore this area is to walk a 1 ½ mile loop that passes through the campground to the edge of the river, up to the Old Mine Road and then back to the campground entrance. A short distance down the road, to the Left, is a spruce grove where Blackburnian Warbler, Blue-headed Vireo, Acadian Flycatcher and Red-shouldered Hawk have been seen. (Note: This grove is also viewable from Old Mine Road.) In early- to mid-May some 50 species of birds may be seen or heard along the way. These include Spotted and Solitary Sandpipers, Swainson’s Thrush, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, cuckoos and Baltimore Oriole. During migration large numbers of orioles are possible. Across Old Mine Road from the entrance is a stream with a small waterfall where Louisiana Waterthrush may be found teetering by the stream edge. In this same area, look for a variety of spring flowers including flowering red trillium, also known as purple trillium, stinking Benjamin or wake-robin.
