The Meadowlands Birding and Wildlife Trails project was coordinated by New Jersey Audubon Society (NJAS) staff, Lillian B. Armstrong, Director of Birding and Wildlife Trails, Linda Gangi, Project Manager, with the guidance of Dale Rosselet, Vice President of Education and Eric Stiles, Vice President of Conservation and Stewardship.

NJAS is extremely grateful to the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission for funding this meaningful and exciting community-based program. The team would especially like to thank Christopher Gale and Gabrielle Bennett-Meany from the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, Hugh Carola of Hackensack Riverkeeper, Inc. and Jim Kirkos of the Meadowlands Regional Chamber of Commerce for their time and expertise throughout the project. Many other people made significant contributions, the talented team at Art270 who created and implemented the guide’s striking design, the skilled professionals at Jersey Printing where the guide was printed and bound, the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission’s talented GIS team who created all the maps in the guide and, of course, all those dedicated people who oversee these wonderful wildlife areas and were kind enough to share their expertise with us. For this website, we are grateful for the efforts of NJAS’s long-time friends, Mike Lyncheski and Robert Riviera of The Harrier Group, and Jim O’Malley, Information Systems Manager at NJAS

Finally, we wish to thank all the fine birders, naturalists, scientists, historians and conservationists who came before us and worked to protect New Jersey’s abundant natural resources, especially the staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers of New Jersey Audubon Society. Their dedication and enthusiasm inspires us, and millions of others, to protect and enjoy wildlife whenever and wherever we can.

Letter from Commissioner Susan Bass-Levin

Dear Nature Enthusiasts,

It is with great pride that we present to you the New Jersey Meadowlands and More Birding and Wildlife Trails Guide. Get a copy of the guide book  — the first eco-tourism guide for this amazing region — and keep it in your glove box or backpack for quick reference as you plan a day outdoors with your family and friends.  Or use this website, where you will find all the same detailed information.

There are so many beautiful and wild places tucked away in and around the Meadowlands. I hope the information within these pages serves as an inspiration to explore, whether you are a new birder, hiker or angler, or an old hand taking a new look at our walking paths, paddling trails, or catch-and-release fishing areas.

When you look out at the wonder of it all, keep in mind that there was a time when all of this was destined to be filled in and erased. But thanks to people like you and the residents of this region — who care about natural jewels like the Meadowlands — we have saved this special place. We are planning a better, smarter future, and we hope you’ll keep coming back to celebrate the regeneration of our Meadowlands.

Sincerely,

Susan Bass Levin
