Information Resources

Kayak

Following is just a handful of the many resources available to help research the area and its wildlife while planning your visit.

For more background information on wildlife watching in New Jersey, visit New Jersey Audubon Society at www.njaudubon.org or New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection at www.state.nj.us/dep.  You can download species check lists of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians at www.nj.gov/dep/fgw/chklists.htm.

There are too many bird identification field guides to list them all here, so we will mention only two. For beginners, we recommend Kaufman’s Field Guide to Birds of North America, by Kenn Kaufman, and The Sibley Guide to Birds, by David Allen Sibley, which also has an Eastern edition that is a smaller size and may be preferable for bringing into the field.

Also, New Jersey Audubon Society has teamed up with partners around the state to provide boaters with an informative brochure to enrich their boating experience by identifying the 28 most common birds found in and near NJ coastal waters.  This Birding for Boaters brochure is part of our education outreach effort, and not only includes tips on bird identification, but also provides recommendations for proper boating “dos and don’ts” to minimize disturbance to coastal nesting species.
